Lattices and crystals; X-ray diffraction; Reciprocal lattice, planes in a lattice; Phonons – dispersion and specific heat; Cohesive energy – Lennard Jones, ionic crystals; Covalent bonds, Metallic cohesion; Free electrons – Drude theory, Hall effect, ac current; Electonic energy bands – Kronig Penney, Bloch theorem.

Electronics

Applications of the electronic devices: electronic switches, operational amplifier, photodiode amplifier, precision rectifiers, peak detectors, sample and hold, instrumentation amplifiers, first and second order active filters. Digital circuits and signals.  Combinational logic circuits and synchronous sequential circuits Digital to analog and analog to digital converters.
